Dr. Stueven presented an abstract at the International Association of Food Protection Annual Meeting entitled
“Restaurant Grades Are Difficult to Find and Understand”
Highlights of the Presentation were:
- We have reviewed hundreds of international, state, regional and community health department websites offering consumer access to restaurant health inspections.
- There are multiple ways in which data is displayed.
- There are multiple ways in which scores or grades are provided.
- In reviewing over 4 million health department inspections we have learned:
- There are multiple score cards used by states or municipalities.
- We count nearly 20.
- There are multiple violations demerit schemes used.
- There are multiple grading curves used.
- There are multiple score cards used by states or municipalities.
- It is nearly impossible to compare numerical scores or letter grades across jurisdictional lines.
- The consumer is left with a web of systems that are excessively confusing.
