Founded by Dr. Harlan Stueven, the Dining Safety Alliance is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
Our Mission is to improve public health and safety within the restaurant and hospitality industry.
We foster community awareness by providing tools so the public can “Dine out with Confidence”. Our strategic alliances with food safety vendors allows us to share new products and services with end users. Our team analyzes health department inspection data and develops tools for public health process improvement.
During Dr. Stueven’s career as an emergency physician and poison specialist he saw over a hundred thousand patients. Hundreds of those suffered from food borne illness but it was the tragic death of a young man from food poisoning that led to his passion to make a difference.
Our collective passion is to reduce the number and severity of food-related illnesses, sparing misery and death.
The Dining Safety Alliance works with Dining Grades, Inc., and has full access to its database. That database has become the industry’s premier collection of public health department restaurant inspection results. The Dining Grades Inc. database is continually updated and analyzed, using proprietary, data-driven methodology.
As a result, the consumer, our first stakeholder now has access to a uniform rating system across most of the USA, Canada and the UK. For over a million restaurants, we have standardized inspection scores and now have a user friendly, focal resource using an easily understandable letter grade system.
For the first time, consumers and industry leaders have a resource to compare and evaluate public health scores across different jurisdictions using a single scale.
We strive to provide public health authorities, our second stakeholder, with data and analysis that can promote development of more consistent processes and inspection scores between agencies.
We seek to provide support for the hospitality industry through our informational blogs, emails and social media. Our strategically aligned industry sponsors, are our second stakeholder group. It is critical for ‘best of class’ industry vendors to ‘get the word out’ in an objective way. Dining Safety Alliance serves as that conduit.
In summary, Dining Safety Alliance is committed to working with the hospitality community and public health departments to improve public safety.
Most importantly, together we will improve public health, reduce the incidence and misery of food borne illness and hopefully save lives.
